At first taste they are very sweet. That’s fairly common with canned baked beans, though. These have 130 calories and 9g sugar per 1/2 cup serving. But that also has a respectable 6g protein.
The sauce is flavorful and has a bit of a garlic hint on the finish. The ingredients list is simple: water, navy beans, onion, brown sugar, tomato paste, cane sugar, rice flour, apple cider vinegar, sea salt, and spices. All of the ingredients are organic (except the water and sea salt, of course).
As far as salt goes, the sodium isn’t too bad. It has 330mg or 14% daily value per serving. And beans are a great source of fiber: 6g or 24% in each serving.
The box also notes that these are vegan, so you don’t have to wonder about the source of the cane sugar.
So, how do they stack up to my favorite brand: Bush’s Best? That same 1/2 cup sized serving has 130 calories, but 12g sugar, so that’s considerably more. The protein is the same: 6g and 5g fiber. The sodium 550mg or 23%, which is also much higher.
Overall, these vegetarian baked beans are a worthy addition to your pantry. I like the flavor of Bush’s Best a little bit better, but these are also good. They’re great to have around for veggie burger night, and they’re also an excellent and healthy snack.
